Beds for Humanity
Why
A bed offers much more than a place to sleep. Due to the unhygienic conditions of slums and migrant settlements, children who sleep on the ground are exposed to rodents, insects, and other harbingers of parasites and viruses such as tapeworms and giardia. These children are lucky if they are able to attend school at all - missing classes due to illness puts them at severe risk of continuing the cycle of poverty. Aside from the health benefits, a bunkbed has important psychological effects on a child's development, allowing them to feel safe, secure, and with a sense of place.
Who
We work with orphanages, partner NGOs, and directly with residents of slums and blue tent settlements to identify children who are in the greatest need of a bunk bed.
What
Our beds are made from the same basic materials as our housing frames - slotted metal angles secured with nuts and bolts. We paint our frames to be more child-friendly and visually appealing and pad the edges with foam tape to protect children from bumps and bruises. While weighing less than 15kg, each frame has the strength to support two adults.
How
We believe that child bedlessness is an under-recognized problem in India. By designing low-cost beds that can be disassembled for easy transport, we're creating bedding that can last throughout childhood. We source funding directly from our partnership network, or else from peer-to-peer crowdfunding campaigns.
